For God and Country, We associate ourselves together for the following purposes:To uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred per cent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations during the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy; to participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of The American Legion; to consecrate and sanctify our association by our devotion to mutual helpfulness." The Auxiliary is a shining example of unselfish giving. With members from all walks of life, the Auxiliary administers hundreds of volunteer programs, gives thousands of hours to the community and to veterans and raises their own funds to support its programs and other charities. Membership in the Auxiliary is limited to women who have direct personal connection with service in World Wars I and II, and the Korean or Vietnam War, or conflicts in Grenada, Lebanon, Panama or the Persian Gulf War. This service is through a member of one's own immediate family who served in the Armed Forces during those wars or conflicts, or through one's own service with the Armed Forces. Upon establishment of eligibility, such women may become members of a local Unit of the Auxiliary. A member of a local Unit is also a member of the Department and the National Organization, just as a citizen of Chicago is also a citizen of Illinois and of the United States. By payment of dues in the local Unit, a member also contributes to the support of the Department and National Organization. Some of the Unit's programs are: Americanism, Auxiliary Emblem Fund, Cavalcade Membership, Children/Youth, Community Service, Constitution and By-Laws, Education, Field Service, Girls State, Indiana Veterans Home, Junior Activities, Knightstown, Leadership, Legislative, Membership, Merit, National Security, Poppy Club, Public Relations and Unit Revitalization. Please contact the post for more information one any one of these programs.
